TIPS: WINDOWS PRINTER ISSUES

Here are my tips to the “Senior Tech Wannabe” about windows printer trouble shooting.

Problem: “I selected the printer, and hit the delete key a few times. But it doesn’t delete, though the status says deleting.”
Answer: “Cancel all the unfinished documents in the queue first. Damn it!”

Problem: “I cannot cancel or restart a job in the print queue. It’s just stuck!”
Answer: “Right click on My Computer > Manage > Services and Applications > Services > Right click on Print Spooler > Restart.”

NO SHOUTING IN THE DATACENTER, PLEASE!

Don't shout at your disks!

Check this out, apparently shouting at your disks causes extreme latency. So, either keep your noises down in the datacenter, or upgrade to solid state drives! Click read more to watch the video. Read more »

Funny Geeky Video

If you are not in the IT business. You won’t think it’s funny. Basically, my whole department was laughing for a couple of hours and we kept on talking about it.

Whoever did this, is very creative and I’m sure himself is a real network administrator as well.

Home Internet Down 4 Whole Day

First day of me quitting smoking. So far, I haven’t had a cigarette for more than 24 hours. It was very challenging today, because the Internet was down at home. And it wasn’t something that I’m able to fix. Duh!

I kept on getting an error when diagnosing the connection on my 2Wire modem, it was something about “Could not find ATM Circuit”. After spending almost an hour talking to some “techies” overseas. Someone finally claimed that there were a outage affecting the whole mid west (yeah right). After a couple of transfers and “power cycling my modem” instructed by the overseas ”techies”, I basically went no where. And was told that I won’t have Internet usage until the “engineers” fixes the problem!

Dear at&t, your overseas customer support SUCK!

Error configuring ODBC data source

Geeks from M$For the first time I experimented this issue on a PC trying to run Microsoft Project for the first time. The error message indicates “Error 1919. Error configuring ODBC data source: MS Access Database. ODBC error 6: Component not found in the registry. Verify that the file MS Access Database exists and that you can access it. “

Then I found out this is caused by either a corrupt registry entry or simply the entry is missing. To fix it, the easiest method would be to import the registry subkeys from another computer.

  1. From a computer or user profile without Error 1919, go to registry edit (Start > Run > Regedit) and export (File > Export) the following and save it into a temp networked folder, or USB drive:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER | Software | ODBC
  2. On the computer with Error 1919, open up registry edit, Import (File > Import) and select the the exported registry file.

Make sure to do the registry import while logged on as the problem user, grant temporary admin access if necessary. Once that’s done, the error message will go away.

WordPress Update & Portfolio

I’ve updated my WordPress to 2.5.1 today. Not much difference in the presentation of the front end. But major difference in the back. While upgrading, I ran into some trouble, mainly because of some old plugins and I was able to resolve them after spending a little time.

I like it very much. WordPress did a great job! :)

I’ve also added a new section to this website, my Portfolio. It contains some of the works I’ve done previously. I’m still organizing and will add more and more into it.

Blackberry Redirect and M$ Exchange

If a corporation does not have BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server) installed, users will have to run Blackberry desktop manager with redirect services on a dedicated desktop, in order to receive their precious emails. However, in this case, they cannot syncronize their calendars onto their RIM devices from what I found out, here are the facts:

  1. If trying to sync via USB cable, the desktop manager software tells you the calendar is not available, I guess that’s because the calendar data are stored on the Exchange server.
  2. Even if user have desktop manager/redirect, they still cannot get calendars, because redirect only pushes email messages.

Please, please! Let me know if I’m wrong.
